Usually, Marshall and Lily stories deliberately have the two of them operating on different emotional frequencies to create some comic conflict, but because this was about putting them in conflict with Robin and Barney, they both got to be over the top in their emotional neediness, and Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan played those notes together well. And turning the story into a parody of romantic comedy cliches, complete with the big emotional gesture conducted standing in the rain, was a nice closing touch. Alas, it does not include an expanded version of Marshall’s various songs about the cat he killed. As for the titular tale of Ted the nookie-less hotel manager, it didn’t take up any more time than was needed, Barney’s initial poem was funny, it’s nice to see Robin now teaming up with her man to mock her ex, and Neil Patrick Harris did his usual stellar job at playing Barney’s visceral reaction to seeing the hot blonde in Ted’s room and realizing the path he has chosen in life. ‘How I Met Your Mother’
The series finale of How I Met Your Mother aired last night to mixed reviews by diehards of the lovable and silly sitcom—because so many people were so attached to Marshall, Lily, Ted, Robin and Barney for nine seasons! Twitter erupted into a frenzy after the east coast showing, with seriously pissed off fans and some peeps that actually liked the ending! Fans were probably thinking: The group has an emotional goodbye outside the wedding, and Barney decides to engage in the high five to end all high fives: Ted stays obviously because he met a girl!
Marshall and Lily are pissed, but happy for him:
Cancel 0 This is a meta-analysis of the finale, which means that I totally ignore the real world details, particularly technical and creative circumstances, and instead focus on the fiction itself, analyzing it as a whole and justifying the controversial ending. And while it is understandable to dislike the ending, especially with the emotional build-up and investment the fans had in the past few seasons, I see the ending as the most fitting one, given the circumstances of the entire fictional narration.
Ted begins his story by recounting to his kids how Marshall proposed to Lily, and in a way, it prodded him to re-think his position in life. Which then leads him into meeting Robin. And it shows from the very beginning. If we are to take the story Ted is telling his kids as a way for him to push the idea of him dating their Aunt Robin, as suggested by his daughter, then it all makes sense, because if it were truly a story of how he met their mother, he would have not started with how he met Robin and how his first date with her went.
If we listen closely to the narration over the course of 9 seasons, there is very little mentioned about the Mother. Also, if we are to look closely at the events of the latter half of the season, where Ted accepts that he has to let go of Robin and convince her that she loves Barney, these is where Ted proves that he still loves Robin. Barney, here, when describing his last play, also gets it right, that by telling Robin to go up, Ted gives his blessing to them, showing his love not only for the latter, but also for Barney.
Finally, if we are to look at the show in its entirety, there are many moments that show Ted sacrificing things because of love:

5 Things From The HIMYM Finale That Were Actually True To Life
Ted Mosby, why must you anger me so? You’re already the fifth most-appealing character in an ensemble of five, you’re destined to age into Bob Saget, and now you spend almost an entire episode hating on my birthplace? Actually, Ted’s pathological Jersey hatred didn’t bother me that much. After all, he had declared it previously albeit in one of the worst episodes in the history of the series, last season’s “We’re Not From Here” , in part because I’ve encountered similar bigotry throughout my life.
No, Barney was with Robin for an entirely different reason. That reason was Ted. So I’ve just decided to give this a dabble. There was also be room for sexy times. And the awkward talk with Robin. And everyone eventually finding out about Ted and Barney. See the end of the work for more notes. After all this could break up the whole group. Marshall nodded agreeing with his wife. He never even talked to me about it before doing this!
This thing with Robin will probably only last 5 minutes.
