As Bloodhound thundered down the runway cheers from the crowd rang out – or at least they would have done had they not been drowned out by the decibel roar of its engine. A five tonne car doing zero to in eight seconds and then slowing down. We did that in spades. Inside the cockpit is a bank of high-tech controls to steer, monitor fuel flows and, crucially, brake. The jet intake is as high above the ground as possible to avoid being clogged by desert dust when more advanced tests take place. After all, nothing is likely to overtake it. Wing Commander Andy Green will be at the wheel of the supersonic vehicle The mastermind behind Bloodhound – distinctive for its orange snout and towering tail fin designed to cut through desert winds – is year-old Ron Ayers, who has come out of retirement in an attempt to break his own record. Information provided by the Brecon Castle Hotel web site. The Brecon Beacons and the Brecon area have a long history of human habitation. Early settlements were mainly on the hill tops as the valleys would have been regularly flooded and covered in dense forest. Evidence has been found of the manufacture of flint tools on the castle site, dating back to years.
North West of the hotel is the remains of Pen-y-crug, an Iron Age hill fort. It may well have been occupied when the Romans arrived – Two miles to the west of Brecon lies Y-Gaer. The first regiment in occupation probably came from North West Spain.

Places to visit in Carmarthenshire Carmarthenshire is the largest County in Wales, situated in the south west, it encompasses coast line, rolling pasture land, the southern tip of the Cambrian Mountains in the north, the verdant Tywi Valley, the dramatic Black Mountain and the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the east. Carmarthenshire Tourist Information Centres can supply full information about the County.
The county town, Carmarthen , on the River Tywi, is a busy town with modern amenities and an ancient history. Carmarthen Castle is a ruined 11th century Norman Castle, overlooking the town. The garden contains the largest single-span glasshouse in the world and the longest herbaceous border in Britain. The Botanic Garden is still being developed, an unique garden to keep visiting.
Llandeilo is a great base for exploring the many historic castles in the area. Four miles west of Llandeilo, Aberglasney Garden is well worth visiting, the restoration programme is bringing this ancient garden back to life, with a cloister garden, parapet walk and six separate garden spaces to enjoy. Two miles west of the town is Gelli Aur Country Park, 60 acres of wooded parkland surrounding a country mansion, where events and craft demonstrations take place throughout the year.
Llandovery is a pretty market town in the upper Towey valley, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. In the town itself is the ruins of Llandovery Castle. In the north east of the County at Pumsaint is Dolaucothi Gold Mines, a Roman gold mine set in the wooded hillside, overlooking the lovely Cothi Valley. There are guided tours of the underground workings, gold panning, exhibitions on gold and mining history and working trains on the mine floor.

The Editors of this magazine, which does not set out to be profound, have been highly successful in capturing material both from professional locomotive engineers (who very sadly are a shrinking breed), from senior railway managers, and from people like Andrew Dow who enjoyed priviledged access to railways at an early age.
I’m blown away by the level of support from fellow rail enthusiasts in building this site. Their willingness to participate in its construction with no prospect of financial gain, just the satisfaction of being involved, is bloody marvellous. Starting in May , Derek’s input has been a massive undertaking and there have been times when the pair of us – just two bungling old geezers with a mutual love for trains and railways – were on our arthritic knees by the sheer size of it all.
And now here we are with three finished pages…or are they? The interest shown by modellers has spurred Derek to suggest a series of articles on the ‘Britannias’ that will be of particular interest to model makers Since taking early retirement, Derek’s knowledge of all things power-driven led him to making a start on correcting the many anomalies he found in books and magazines regarding the BR Class 7MT Britannias.
Derek’s research has taken him more than 6 years and his findings now run into three page on this site. This is in complete contrast to his original reservations.
